Now that Summer is here, it’s the perfect time to pack up your Tarot deck, a journal and pen and head off to the beach, a park or your backyard and do some self exploration.

What do I need to know/see/understand right now?

What do I need to focus on right now?

What message do my spirit guides/angels have for me?

How can I have more fun in life?

What’s the best way for me to make a positive difference in the world?

What will help me feel more at peace?

How can I express myself creatively this week?

What talent do I have that I need to use more?

What part of myself am I ignoring/denying right now?

What do I need more of in my life?

What do I need less of in my life?

How can I feel more connected to others?

Who in my life do I need to reach out to right now?

What is influencing me the most right now?

What spiritual lesson am I trying to master right now?

How can I be more powerful and effective in my life right now?

What is my biggest block at the moment?

What characteristics do I need to fully embrace?

What area of my life needs the most attention right now?

How can I feel more free?

  • What if you get a negative card in a positive position?

For example, let’s say you ask “how can I make a positive difference in the world?” and you get The Hanged Man. How on Earth will you interpret that?!

1. Put yourself in the position of the figure on the card. When you become The Hanged Man, what do you notice?

I notice that I am powerless to do anything action wise, but I still have control over how I think and feel. Surrendering to what is brings peace, fighting what is brings suffering.

I also notice that I am upside down, which gives me a totally different perspective on things than I had before!

So I might interpret this as meaning that I can make a positive difference in the world by not wasting energy on fighting against what is. Instead I should put my energy on finding peace where I am and remembering that there is always more than one perspective. When I am in a peaceful state and when I recognize there are many ways to see a situation, I will behave differently and voila! I will have made a positive difference in the world!

2. Ask “what is the positive side to this card?”

All cards – regardless of whether they appear “negative” or “positive” have a positive side to them.

For example, The Devil is about addiction and feeling trapped and stuck, but it’s also about breaking free from addiction and stuckness. So if I had gotten The Devil instead of The Hanged Man for the above question, I may conclude that in order to make a positive difference in the world, I need to first break free of my own destructive habits and patterns and then help others to do the same.

  1. I was meditating and met my power animal, a lynx. When I looked it up, a website said it might be a good time to do a reading. I didn’t know what to ask, so those questions listed helped me frake mine very well. Thank you. 2 cards fell off as I shuffled… Ten of water and ace of earth (angel tarot). It helped me understand my wants better and that I know I can get there.

I’m also a writer and my reading told me to focus on the one story I felt drawn to more lately. It makes sense but I was struggling between my 2 babies. One might be stillborn… I might have to accept that.

  2. I look forward to my date tonight! 🙂 as another person commented I am also new to tarot although I’ve had my set since the 90’s I’ve only touch the surface of them – Celtic cross and yes/no questions. I am looking forward to learning and trying these questions out. Thank you. 🙂

  3. This was really cool! I am a beginner reader and the other day I was attempting one (a reading) and I just didn’t get the answer I had to my question. It was frustrating. Then I come across this article and I did all the questions and they all made sense! And it seemed like they/I knew what it was going to be all along. And these questions allowed me to see the card, one I got three times, in a different light every time. But eventually leading to the same answer that I needed to hear. It was just so cool. Thank you for that!!

  4. I am fairly new at reading. I have had cards for years and basically “played” with them. Recently (the last 6 months) I became a more serious student. I ran across these questions so I figured I’d give it a go. It helped me turn a corner. I did them over a two day period and I found that by question 6 or 7 I was interpreting the cards for that situation without looking up any answers. Thank you.

    1. Becki, I did the same thing! After a few years of plugging along diligently at reading, I found that by working through these questions one by one, not only did I become much more adept at the Celtic Cross, but I also found that my need to go to “the book” to look up specific meanings dwindled away to nothing.

  5. Hi Kate. What a great list of questions.Thank you so much.I have always had a difficult time with asking a question whilst shuffling the deck.Sometimes I was unable to think of a question,so I just drew a card just to see what would happen.NOW,though,I have your wonderful list for direction.Simply superb. Many, many thanks.

  6. Thank you so much, Kate for sharing this wonderful list. It’s useful not just for the daily one card draw that I use first thing in the morning but one can use a bunch of these questions to have an intimate and insightful conversation with the cards.

    1. You are so welcome, Katy – I’m thrilled that you found this list helpful and I wish you many wonderful readings with these questions 🙂

  7. So I just completed my questions. I wrote them down one at a time and drew a card. I would return the card each time and reshuffle. Thought it was interesting that I drew ten of air three times and justice three times.

    1. Oh wow! You got repeating cards a lot! That is interesting. I would suggest spending some time contemplating those cards together and asking yourself what they mean to you (outside of the context of your questions). Good luck 🙂

  8. Wow, Kate, you have answered my prayers with this fabulous list of questions! Thank you SO much for these, as my wellspring of questions was starting to dry up! You are the BEST!

  9. I’ve had a great night with myself and my tarot already and I’ve only asked a few questions. This is more than a date night with Tarot, it’s a whole relationship. Thank you so much.

    Love & Light

  10. Awesome ideas, Kate! I will definitely use these questions to ask my tarot cards and I am a writer anyway, so this is great inspiration! You managed to form the questions perfectly. It’s always challenging for me to ask questions about myself…my life because I don’t feel I word them correctly when working with my tarot decks. THANKS A BUNCH!!! 🙂

    1. Tameko! I’m so glad you liked this list 🙂 I hope it gives you lots of ideas and inspiration with you tarot reading and writing!
      Cheers,
      Kate
