Welcome to part 6 of my 40 part series Minor Arcana Meanings Deep Dives – each week or so we’ll hang out with ONE Tarot card and dive deeply into it’s symbols, meanings and messages – I’ll even give you some journalling questions to help you contemplate and connect with each card. This is similar to my Major Arcana Meanings Deep Dive series and my Meet the Court Cards series.

Today we’re diving into the Two of Swords – a card of indecision and mental conflict! What happens when you MUST make a choice but you don’t have all the info you need to make an informed decision? Or when your intuition tells you one thing but your intellect says another? Let’s find out…

Suit = Swords
Element = Air (mind, intellect, thoughts, communication)
Number 2 – choice/decision/crossroads

Keywords:

dilemma, choice, crossroads, decision, inner (mental) conflict

Symbols:

Blindfold = can’t see clearly, don’t have all the info, must rely on inner self (intuition) to make decisions

Crossed arms = conflicted, at a crossroads

Two swords pointing in different directions = two different paths or choices

Water with partially revealed rocks = can’t see the whole landscape because it’s partially submerged (not having all the info)

Advice & Messages

When the Two of Swords appears in your reading, it’s warning you that you may need to feel your way forward instead of thinking your way forward. This is because you probably don’t have all the info you need to make an “informed” decision, so you must rely on instinct and intuition.

But the Two of Swords also tells you to avoid staying in this state of indecision too long as it’s very physically and mentally taxing!!! It’s like getting stuck in one position while rock climbing – you won’t be able to hold onto that ledge forever.

External vs Internal Meanings

Internally, the Two of Swords depicts a wrestling match between your intellect and intuition (when it comes to making a decision).

Externally, this card is telling you that you’re being presented with a choice or dilemma and you must make a decision at some point. Sooner rather than later!

Reversed

If the Two of Swords appears reversed, it’s meaning doesn’t really change all that much but it can show that you’re feeling really stuck when it comes to making a decision.

You may feel frozen with indecision and lack the ability to just make a choice and move forward. In some ways, this is a refusal to step into your power and take charge of your life.
