The Lost Tarot of Nostradamus

Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this deck by the publisher for review purposes.

lost tarot of nostradamusThe Lost Tarot of Nostradamus by John Matthews and Wil Kinghan is a unique and historical deck that will have Tarot deck collectors practically peeing their pants with excitement. I’ll tell you why in a hot minute…

Details: published by Tuttle Publishing in 2012, this deck and book set comes in a nice sturdy box. The cards are of a thick stock with a matte finish.

Likes:

  • Is a historical, fascinating deck that tells us a lot about the time period in which it was originally created
  • Has a mysterious, old world vibe
  • The companion book is packed with useful information about this deck!

Dislikes:

  • Hard to shuffle (thick cards)
  • Lots of popes and other religious figures on the cards
  • A very challenging deck to read with. Plus, roman numerals!

The coolest thing about this deck is the story behind it! In 1994, an undiscovered volume of Nostradamus’ work was found. In it was the drawings for a Tarot deck that Nostradamus had been creating. The authors took those images and created The Lost Tarot of Nostradamus.

nostradamus-magicianReading with this deck really does make you feel like you are traveling back in time to the 1500’s. The cards have a very old, mysterious feel to them, which makes for a really unique reading experience.

This is certainly NOT a beginners Tarot deck. I have been reading Tarot for years and I had to look up the meanings in the book for some of the cards. This was due to the fact that the imagery, card names and suits differ from the standard Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck and the cards have Roman numerals on them. If you’re unlike me and paid attention in school and know your Roman numerals, you are one step ahead.

The companion book is awesome! It has all the information about how The Lost Tarot of Nostradamus was discovered and created, detailed explanations of each card meaning and three Tarot spreads, as well as some additional information about meditating and reading with the cards.

The card meaning section is essential because without it its hard to know what the hell is going on in half of the cards. Much of the symbolism is very different from your standard Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck, so don’t expect to just pop this deck out of the box and begin reading with it. Take your time to get to know this deck.

But what’s really interesting is seeing how Nostradamus portrayed each Tarot card. Studying these cards has given me a new understanding of certain cards, causing me to see them in a different light.

Since the Church played a huge role in 16th century European society, this deck is packed full of popes, cardinals and religious symbols. For some reason, looking at drawings of popes puts me in a pissy mood. I am not sure why. If I had to guess I would say it stems from a past life where I was forced into religion. To be honest, most artwork from this time period kind of creeps me out. But if popes are your thing, this deck will knock your socks off!

You’re on the Right Path ~ Angel Card for Wednesday

your on the right path
Life Purpose Oracle Cards by Doreen Virtue

Do you find yourself thinking am I on the right path? Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing?

The answer is YES, even if it doesn’t really seem like it. Many people believe that if you are unhappy and struggling that it means that you have veered off your path, but that is not always true.

Making the “wrong” choices, messing up and facing challenges is all part of your path – and so is being blissful and enjoying life. So don’t feel that you are failing at life just because some days are totally shitty.

But am I doing enough? I hear you asking. Yes you are, so just relax! Part of your path or purpose is to simply live your life in accordance with your beliefs and values, even if they differ from those around you. If you are doing this, you’re ahead of the game!

Justice! Look Beneath the Surface (Wednesday)

justice tarot
Intuitive Tarot by Cilla Conway

Wednesday’s Tarot card is Justice and she comes to tell you that everything is equal, balanced and fair, even if it doesn’t seem that way right now.

Don’t concern yourself with “getting even” if someone has pissed you off or wronged you – just get on with your day, even if that feels difficult.

You may feel extra challenged today when it comes to imposing your will on others – you may either be tempted to boss someone around or you might feel as though someone else is trying to do this to you.

Focus on seeing the underlying theme of the situation. For example, if your friend is acting a bit manipulative, try to see what is going on underneath all of that – perhaps she is trying to control things because her life feels out of control. This will help you be compassionate and not take the behavior personally.

Eight of Swords – See Your Problems as a Game (Tuesday)

eight of swords
Druidcraft Tarot

The Eight of Swords comes today to remind you of why you create “problems” in your life.

From the perspective of your Higher Self, you create problems so you can learn to heal and create change for yourself. In other words, your problems and challenges exist to help you become skilled at creating peace and joy for yourself.

Think of your “problems” as a game and get creative thinking of different ways you might shift things. The woman in this card is here by her own accord – no one put her there and no one will rescue her – it is up to her to untie herself and lift her blindfold.

Once you see your problems as something that is self created, you are free to have fun with them – this sounds a bit “out there”, I know! But looking at your life in this way can create a sense of peace and freedom.

Tarot of The Dream Enchantress Review

tarot of the dream enchantressThe Tarot of the Dream Enchantress was created by artist Marco Nizzoli and published in 2008 by Lo Scarabeo and Llewellyn. It is a 78 card Tarot deck, based on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck structure.

The deck comes with the standard LWB (Little White Book) that has the basic Tarot card meanings, two really cool dream interpretation spreads and some brief information about this particular deck and how to use it.

Likes

  • Lots of nudity!
  • No words on the cards
  • Imaginative artwork full of fairies, angels, mermaids, dragons and other weird creatures

Dislikes

  • A distinct lack of naked men. Although there is a very sexy blue haired angel in The Lovers who makes up for this lack of male anatomy 😉
  • The Kings, which are women wearing creepy masks
  • Roman numerals! Arrgh!

As soon as I looked through this deck, I could tell right away that artist Marco Nizzoli loves drawing naked ladies. And who can blame him? Nude pixies, fairies, and angels frequently prance through this deck. In this way, it is a very feminine deck, as all the cards feature women. There are very few men here, save for the occasional background lurker.

A very strange thing is that all the court cards depict women, even the Kings and Knights. All the Kings are actually women wearing bizarre masks. This kind of threw me at first and even after using this deck for years, it still catches me off guard. Even Major Arcana cards that usually depict men – such as The Emperor and The Fool – are instead women wearing creepy masks.

These masked figures are tough to read and it can feel like your trying to read a blank card. It’s like having a conversation with someone who is wearing sunglasses – it feels unsettling and irritating! You may find these masked ladies intriguing, who knows? But it just didn’t work for me.

What is really amazing about reading with this deck is that you feel like you are stepping into a different realm – a realm of naked pixies and scantily-clad angels. This seems like such a free, innocent world and when you read with these cards, that sense of freedom rubs off on you. This is perhaps what I love about this deck!

Another bonus is that this is not a Rider-Waite “clone” deck as it strays a little from the conventional meanings in many cards, but not so much that it becomes a struggle to read with. The meaning of each card isn’t always obvious, which forces you to contemplate the images and interact with them, making for some interesting readings.

the wheelYou will not see any words on these cards. The Major Arcana are indicated by Roman numerals and the Minor Arcana cards have a symbol at the top – like a cup or wand – and a regular, non-roman numeral number at the bottom. This is both annoying and a relief.

I find it less distracting when there’s an absence of words and this lets me access my intuition more easily. But since I don’t know Roman numerals very well, I have to rely completely on the Major Arcana card images to tell me what card is what. Sometimes it gets confusing, but overall I really like this design.

I have had this deck for a good four years now and I am well past my “honeymoon phase” with it – I often buy a deck, fall in love and then quickly lose interest. Not so with the Tarot of the Dream Enchantress. This is one of those decks that I just keep bringing out again and again to play with. I say “play” because I rarely use it for doing professional readings. I use it for creative writing inspiration, meditation, contemplation, journalling and personal readings.

Buy this deck if…

      • You are looking for a more “out there” deck with fantastical, sexy images
      • You have been reading Tarot for a while and want a challenge!
      • A purely feminine deck would be a nice addition to your Tarot collection

Five of Pentacles: Don’t be Afraid to Lead…

five of pentacles tarot card
Tarot of Mermaids

You may feel an urge to help someone today, but a voice in your head will say but I’m no expert or I’m not qualified or some nonsense along those lines.

You don’t have to be miles ahead of someone to help them on their life path – you only need to be two steps ahead. The Five of Pentacles suggests you are needed in a helping role, but worry that because you struggle with the same issues as the person your helping, you could make matters worse.

Your life experience lets you relate to others with similar challenges. This allows you to be compassionate and understanding – so don’t kid yourself and think that you aren’t good enough to be a valuable role model. Your experience is needed today.

Oracle Card for Thursday ~ Celebrate the Mundane!

three graces
Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle by Lucy Cavendish

The Three Graces from the Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle want you to celebrate and have fun today. No matter what is going on, throw a little party – even if its just for yourself!

The message on the card reads “cooperative ventures with friends, joy, sharing, new partnerships that are fun.”

The emphasis is on fun today. Ask yourself just how much fun can I have today? If you have a dull day ahead (for example, going to work, sitting through meetings or talking with boring people), challenge yourself to bring a spirit of mischief, joy and celebration to it.

Maybe this means you will wear something flashy, like a hot pink feather boa? Or perhaps you will send your friends pretty cards just because (and include a heartfelt note inside). Whatever you do, remember that the mundane, everyday life is worth celebrating 🙂

In the comments below, share what you will be doing today to bring an element of fun to the day?
(I am going to bake my man-friend a special cake with a silly message on it for no reason at all!)

Tuesday’s Oracle Card: Open the Door to your Psychic Self!

secret doorwayThe Secret Doorway oracle card, from the Wild Wisdom of the Faerie deck, is all about “Working with intuition, Second sight opening, Dimensional doorways.”

The stars and planets have aligned and now is the right time for you to really explore your natural-born intuitive gifts. No more excuses!

Sign up for that class or even start your own psychic group, if that idea appeals to you. You won’t realize how psychic you really are until you let go of your inhibitions and start practicing.

Here’s a fun psychic challenge to try: get a magazine and, with your eyes closed, open to a random page and place your hand over it. Attempt to “see” with the palm of your hand and record your observations. Then open your eyes and see if the image you saw in your mind was similar to what was on the page.

Page of Pentacles ~ Tarot Card for Thursday

Greetings! I returned home yesterday from my vacation in Alaska and after a full day of laundry, unpacking and doing the usual boring post-vacation stuff, I am excited to get back to my daily readings!

page of pentacles
Crystal Visions Tarot

Today’s Tarot card is the Page of Pentacles, one of my faves! This card has come to speak to the student within you – the lifelong learner that loves learning new skills and reading countless books.

Today is the day to fully immerse yourself in learning something for its own sake. Don’t learn to better yourself – learn because its fun, because it lets you be in the moment.

Take an inquisitive approach to problems and challenges today. Do your research before making a decision and don’t assume you know how another person feels.

When it comes to being creative, don’t let your inexperience hold you back. So what if your artwork or music sucks? Keep at it and you’ll get way better than you ever thought possible. Be willing to experiment today!

Today’s question: if you had no fear, what creative skill would you want to learn? Let me know in the comments below…
