Are Tarot Cards People?

I am always trying to think of fun ways to connect with my Tarot cards and get a better understanding of them.

From meditating with my cards to interviewing my Tarot deck, I’ve tried it all!

But the other day, one of my readers said she likes to use her Tarot cards as inspiration for character development in her writing….and this got me thinking….

What if I looked at each Tarot card as if it was a person with unique character traits, quirks and secret desires?

I decided to start with one of my favorite cards, the Queen of Wands.

I imagine her to be a real go-getter. Sophisticated, focused and driven, I bet she would read books like Write it Down, Make it Happen and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

If it was the 80’s she would be rockin’ the shoulder pads!

She’s the kind of gal who gets up at 6 am to workout to an aerobics tape like this one:

As a dinner date she is interesting company, but never stops talking…which can get a bit obnoxious.

Of course, this is easy enough to do with a Court Card, but what about a minor arcana card like the Four of Cups?

four of cups
Anna K Tarot

If the Four of Cups were a person, he would be one of those passive-aggressive types. When asked where he wants to go for dinner, he would reply “wherever you want to go” but then be all dissatisfied and resentful about it!

On vacation, he always finds things to be unhappy about – from the low threadcount hotel sheets to the lukewarm quiche.

If friends recommend books and movies to him, he is always “disappointed”  and nothing is quite up to snuff. “I read The Hunger Games,” he laments “and I really don’t see what you liked about it.”

The Four of Cups likes to play it safe. He gravitates to the mundane things in life – only watching blockbusters and eating in chain restaurants – so no wonder he is eternally unsatisfied!

His secret wish is to feel ALIVE in everything he does, but his fear of the unknown holds him back.

Your turn!

Choose a Tarot card that you find a bit perplexing. Now pretend that it isn’t just a card….it’s a person!

What personality traits does he/she have?

What kind of movies does he/she like?

What kind of hobbies are of interest?

What is his/her secret desire?

Tell me what you come up with in the comment section below!

Tarot of the Dream Enchantress

But don’t ignore that niggling feeling that something is “off” – explore it and see where it takes you. Your intuition is trying to tell you something and sometimes you mistake this for danger, but it’s not.

Know that you are safe now and any “danger” you perceive may be a result of things not working out well in the past. As you let go of these negative expectations, your energy levels will soar and you will be truly free!

Ten of Pentacles ~ Insatiability & Rampant Consumerism! (Friday)

fridays with veronicaVeronica Noir is a lover of Tarot, cats and men in their early 20′s. Veronica spends her days eating coffee cheesecake, spying on neighbors and just being her fabulous self! Let’s see what she has to say about the Ten of Pentacles

ten-of-pentacles
Housewives Tarot

Beware of those who hold up certain “values” as if they were universal.

The lady in this Ten of Pentacles card is holding up the picture of a giant house as if to say “look! This is what we all should strive for – an orange mansion with strategically placed shrubbery!”

But do you notice that this domesticity-pusher is wearing an apron? It’s because she is serving an “ideal” that does not serve her. But before I go all sociology student on you….

Lets take an even closer look at this card. What is actually being held up and presented is a giant round hole – a hole that needs to be filled.

You can stuff this “hole” with all kinds of things – food, orange mansions, money, material possessions, a hunky spouse, pointless busy-ness, or my favorite one….lots of sex!

But like a Sigmund Freud nightmare, this hole is insatiable and always hungers for more. What to do? What to do?

Be a Laura Croft hole raider and find out as much as you can about your “hole” – ooh, that sounds dirty! But really, notice what you habitually try to stuff yourself with. For me, its coffee cheesecake and stiletto boots, but for you maybe it’s jumbo jets and hookers. Don’t judge yourself.

In the comments below, give me the dirty deets…what do you strive to attain in the hopes it will make you feel “whole” and satisfied?

Embracing Sadness ~ Ten of Swords (Thursday)

10 of swords
Fairytale Tarot by Karen Mahony

The Ten of Swords has appeared today to let you know that you have some sadness that needs to be released.

This can happen in three ways – you may unconsciously create a situation in which you can feel sadness and express it, or you will have a sad dream which allows you to feel intense emotion or you can just feel the feeling of grief/sadness and let it move through your body until it is released.

The last option is best as it is quickest and will not create added drama. Something has come to and end and this is just the last phase of release – then you will be free to turn over a new leaf and start things afresh!

The key is to not be afraid of this emotion – the feeling itself is harmless, it is only when you try to avoid the feeling that it becomes uncomfortable.

Should You Let Others Touch Your Tarot Cards?

To touch or not to touch? That is the question!

I am often asked “is it okay for others to touch my Tarot cards?”
There is a belief that if someone else handles your cards, their energy will be absorbed by the deck and mess up the accuracy of future readings.

This is a legitimate concern and it is certainly possible. BUT…..

To be concerned that someone’s energy could mess up your cards is kind of like being worried that someone might get their germs on your doorknob. Yes, it happens, but that’s what Purrell is for!

So yes, when you let other’s get their grubby mits on your cards, you run the risk of them contaminating the deck – both energetically and germ-wise. But there are so many methods of clearing your deck, that this shouldn’t be a concern for you.

Some Zippy Ways to Cleanse Your Deck:

  • Simply shuffle it and intend that the shuffling is removing any unwanted energy
  • Place your cards on your windowsill over night on a Full Moon! Witchy!
  • Put a crystal, like clear quartz, on top of the deck for a few hours
  • Knock on your deck to break up and dispell any leftover energy
  • Waft burning sage over your cards (sage is a wonderful energy cleanser – its like the Purrell of the spirit realms)

Burning Sage can cleanse your Tarot cards of negative or unwanted energies

Having said all that, some Tarot card readers just prefer to be the only one handling their cards and letting others touch their cards would be just plain wrong, like sharing underwear. And that’s okay too. Do what you feel most comfortable with.

Personally, if I am having my Tarot cards read, I like to choose my own cards and touch them as much as possible! This makes me feel like I am participating fully in my own reading and that the cards I end up with couldn’t be wrong since I chose them. And if someone tells me I can’t touch something, I feel like a five year old in an art gallery and I WANT TO TOUCH even more!

So here’s my two cents:

If you have been reading Tarot for years and never let anyone touch your cards and this is the way you like it – keep doing it that way. If it works, do it.

But if you are new to Tarot and are wondering whether or not you should let other’s touch your cards when your reading for them, RELAX! It’s totally fine for others to touch away. In fact, I feel like this enhances the authenticity of a reading. You just need to trust in the power of your intention to clear your Tarot deck of any unwanted energies afterwards.

I am curious to hear what your take on this is! So let me know in the comments below how you feel about people touching your cards – are you okay with it? Or do you have a strict no-touch policy?

Decode Your Celebrity Obsessions With Tarot

I was standing in line at the grocery store yesterday, reading Star magazine (my trusted news source) when an idea for a really fun Tarot exercise came to me.

Do you ever wonder why you are fascinated by particular celebrities or fictional characters? I do. And I figured there had to be some deep, twisted psychological explanation for it. So I decided to consult my Tarot cards to get the juicy deets…

Step One:
Ask yourself what celebrity/fictional character do I find most fascinating? (or, which celebrity do I have a crush on?). Then, go through your Tarot deck and pick out 1-3 cards that best represents this person. These are the qualities that you are powerfully drawn to, whether you realize it or not.

If you don’t care about celebrities or fictional characters and have no idea who anyone is, then you can substitute a real person in your life – preferably someone you feel drawn to and find extremely intriguing. Like the long-eyelashed mailboy at your office, or the neighbor’s wife. Or your spouse, I guess.

the-fool-tarot-card

Whoever it is, ask yourself who they would be in the Tarot. Are they the bright eyed and bushy tailed young man in The Fool? The stuffy, constipated Emperor? The spazzy juggler in Two of Pentacles? Or perhaps a combination of the three?

Step Two:
Ask yourself what that Tarot card means to you right now.

  • What significance does it have in your life?
    • Does this Tarot card embody the traits you wish you had?
      • Or the things you are missing in your life?
        • How do you express the energy of this card in your life right now?
        • If you have chosen more than one card, look for repeating symbols and similarities

When I did this Tarot experiment, I picked James Bond as my fascinating fictional character (the Daniel Craig version). I am intrigued by the way he coldly kills people, rides motorbikes on rooftops, heartlessly kills people, jumps out of moving trains and kills people, all without giving it a second thought. So sexy!

The three Tarot cards that, for me, represent James Bond are The Moon, Five of Wands and Eight of Cups. The Moon because he is so mysterious, Five of Wands because he always seems to be in a tussle with someone, and the Eight of Cups because he is always scampering off into the night after bedding some foxy lady.

Without boring you to tears with the details of my personal life, I will say that these three cards accurately reflect what’s going on for me right now.

The Five of Wands represents an inner struggle of conflicting interests (I want to do this… no, I want to do that), Eight of Cups reveals that I am indeed turning my back on something and The Moon illustrates my desire to keep my life very private and my feelings hidden.

In the comments below, tell me what celebrity (or person) you chose and what cards you picked to represent them and why….can’t wait to hear!!!!

What’s Missing in your Tarot Reading?

Today I want to talk about the “missing cards” in a Tarot reading – the cards that are conspicuously absent.

For example, lets say you are doing the Celtic Cross Spread and you have some Pentacles, Swords, Cups and a Major Arcana card or two….but absolutely NO Wands. What does this mean?

Usually, if a reading is void of Wands it can mean there is a lack of passion. So if you were asking about a business idea, the above reading example might indicate that you’ve thought things through (Swords), made practical plans (Pentacles) and your heart is in it (Cups) but you don’t really want to do it – there is no real passion there.

the sun tarot card
The Paulina Tarot

An absence of Cups can mean this situation needs more love, emotion or feeling. No Swords show that more rational thought and clear communication is needed. Few or no Pentacles can indicate that your ideas are not grounded in reality and practicality.

Tarot Tip: The cards that are absent from a reading are just as important as the ones staring back at you.

A really cool thing you can do right now is go through your favorite Tarot deck (the one you most often use) and look at each card. You will notice right away the ones that almost never come up for you in a reading. They will jump right out at you!

Ask yourself if these “no show” cards represent something that’s missing from your life, or do they simply not relate to your situation right now? Sometimes, its the Tarot cards we want the most that never seem to show up for us!

What cards are mysteriously absent for YOU? And what do you think it means? Tell me all about it in the comment section below…

Learn the Tarot Court Cards Once and For All!

I have a confession….for years I never really felt all that confident with the Court Cards.  When they came up in my own readings, I would feel mildly annoyed and when they came up during a reading I was doing for someone else, I would inwardly curse.

Why?

crystal visions tarot
The Queen of Wands from the Crystal Visions Tarot

Because the Court Cards are tricky! They aren’t like the other cards. They are more subtle, more secretive and less obvious than many of the Major and Minor Arcana cards.

So while I had mastered all the other cards in the Tarot, after years of study, the Court Cards remained elusive to me. And they made me doubt my ability as a Tarot Reader.

So I decided to spend some quality time with my Court Cards and learn them once and for all. I read all about the Tarot Courts in all the books I had and I tried all the exercises. By the time I was done I felt I had “mastered” the Court Cards!

I want you to feel like you’ve mastered the Court Cards too, so I present to you my favorite Court Card learning exercises and fun techniques that helped me the most. Enjoy!….
